Automate the machines behind precision manufacturing.

As an automation technician apprentice at CMSA in Boudry, you’ll learn to design, build, program, and maintain the automated systems and robots that drive modern production. From CAD modelling to commissioning and troubleshooting, you’ll work across electronics, mechanics, and software.

What you’ll learn

1st year

Design and production

  • Study customer requirements, develop the project with the technical-office team, and model components in CAD
  • Analyze a plant’s manufacturing process to decide which operations to automate
  • Use software, or develop a specific program, for the customer’s industrial application
  • Propose and test control and automation solutions on computer, in the lab, or on site
  • Plan production work and monitor its progress
  • Write the technical operating and maintenance documentation for the installation
2nd year

Assembly and commissioning

  • Assemble, mount, and wire automated installations, robots, or control systems from plans
  • Check the installation’s precise operation, such as speed, temperature, and emergency stops
  • Set, adjust, and test the device or machine under all intended operating conditions and safety standards
  • Solve problems as they arise, or call in IT or mechanical specialists
  • Commission automated installations, connect the various devices, make them compatible, and link them to the control unit
  • Program automated or robotic installations, check their operation, and make adjustments
3rd year

Maintenance and troubleshooting

  • Dismantle, repair, upgrade, and reassemble installations
  • Regularly check that installations are running correctly
  • Identify the causes of control-circuit faults or malfunctions using measuring devices and analysis software
  • Intervene on the installation or the control software when a fault occurs
  • Monitor process data and take the measures needed to optimize installations
  • Measure the installations’ energy consumption and improve their efficiency
4th year

Managing assignments

  • Plan assignments in the field of installation automation
  • Check that assignments run correctly and on schedule
  • Record and analyze the results of assignments
  • Train staff to use the installations
Apprentices rotate departments every six months to gain diverse experience.
