08.08.2025 - Cendres+Métaux clarifies position on gold exports to the USA

Biel/Bienne, 8. August 2025 – In the current political and economic debate surrounding Swiss gold exports and US tariffs, Cendres+Métaux has been mistakenly portrayed as a gold refinery. This is factually incorrect and contributes to a distorted perception of our group.

Clarification: No production of gold bars for international trade

Cendres+Métaux emphasizes that while the group collaborates with certified gold refineries, it is not a refinery itself and does not produce tradable gold bars. Key facts at a glance:

  • Cendres+Métaux is not a refinery and does not export gold to the USA.
  • The company completely exited the refining business in 2020, and the associated facility in Lyss was sold.
  • As a result, the group is no longer certified by the LBMA (London Bullion Market Association) and does not produce gold bars for international trade.
  • Cendres+Métaux recycles precious metals, produces alloys in its precious metal foundry, and processes these alloys into products and components as a supplier to various industries.
  • As a precious metal processor, Cendres+Métaux works with refineries to recycle and refine precious metal alloys back into their individual metals.

Background: Precious metal recycling and strategic diversification

Cendres+Métaux has over 150 years of experience in precious metal processing. The company was founded 140 years ago in Biel through the merger of two precious metal smelters. Over the decades, the company has grown through the melting and recycling of precious metals and the production of alloys, particularly for the dental sector.

A sustainable and responsible approach to precious metals has always been central to our identity. Today, Cendres+Métaux is a member of the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) and the Swiss Association of Precious Metal Manufacturers and Traders (ASFCMP). We are committed to responsible, transparent and environmentally sound processes throughout the entire value chain.

In recent years, the Cendres+Métaux Group has undergone significant strategic diversification and technological transformation. The group has expanded into new business areas, including the watchmaking industry, medical technology, electronics/aeronautics, and in the semiconductor sector. Automated processes, modern manufacturing methods and innovative solutions have become key pillars of our business model.

While precious metal and alloy processing remains an important area of expertise, Cendres+Métaux has long outgrown the role of a traditional precious metal processor. The group has expanded into the non-precious metal sector, particularly in the processing of titanium. Our core strength today lies in the high-precision manufacturing of complex components for demanding applications across multiple key industries.

The name Cendres+Métaux – “Ashes and Metals” – reflects our history, but no longer fully represents the scope and identity of the group. As part of our strategic repositioning, we are transitioning to the new name CMSA Holding SA – a clear signal of our continued evolution. Further information will follow in due course.
